It’s become de rigeur to lead in to profiles of noted actresses with some tone-deaf anecdote designed to illustrate how they’re just like everybody else (“She pauses to eat her Michelin-starred take-away with a tiny diamond-encrusted fold-up fork…”).

However, anyone who’ll not only endure my impression of a Nine newsreader, but join in with her own as well – all while having her hair and makeup done – is alright by me.

That’s how it was when I joined Teresa Palmer in an over-air-conditioned hotel room (“Upon checking that it was a ‘mid-shot’, she covered her knees with her pretty coat and, in an exaggerated VH1-voiceover, barked ‘This is how the magic happens!’…”) to discuss her role in Kieran Darcy-Smith’s Wish You Were Here.

Self-centred and terrified Sydney party girl Steph is the linchpin of the naturalistic thriller, and the role seems gifted to Palmer after a few years of big-budget, green-screen action.

In a freewheeling chat, the Adelaide ex-pat expressed her love of independent cinema, her decision to let megabucks multiplex fare “pay the bills”, and her plans to eventually write and produce her own films. Unfortunately our bravura newsreader impressions were left on the cutting room floor, but some things have to be kept a mystery in this era of total-access, don’t they?

And it’s not everyday we get to chat with someone who’s actually kissed the Aussie hunkster…

“I did get to kiss Liam,” fellow Australian Teresa Palmer confessed at the Valentino store opening in Beverly Hills.But Hemsworth’s girlfriend, Miley Cyrus, has nothing to worry about. Palmer costars with Hemsworth in the upcoming romantic drama AWOL.“It’s very much a Notebook style movie,” the blond beauty explained. “I try desperately not to fall in love with a soldier who’s gone AWOL from the Vietnam War but that soldier is Liam Hemsworth! It’s sort of a bittersweet romance between them. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful.”

Sure sounds like it.

“Liam is lovely,” Palmer said. “He’s the most perfect male costar.”
